SIERRA COUNTY — The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a blizzard warning for Sierra County and a significant portion of northeastern California from Thursday, February 29th, to Sunday morning. Blizzard conditions will peak on Friday into Saturday morning. 1 to 4 feet of snow is expected above 3000’, with 5 to 10 feet above 5000’. Travel is highly discouraged during this time. The snow level is expected to be 4500’ to 5500’ on Thursday, 2000’ to 4000’ on Friday, and 1000’ to 2500’ by Saturday. Recent forecasts are suggesting the possibility of snowfall extending throughout next week. The NWS states that “extremely dangerous to impossible travel conditions” and extended road closures are likely, citing blowing snow creating white-outs with near zero visibility. If traveling is necessary, the NWS recommends carrying a winter survival kit and staying with your vehicle should you become stranded.
