DOWNIEVILLE — The Boomtown Lounge & Backyard’s year-long trivia competition wrapped up last Thursday with a final game and the announcement of this year’s champion and podium positions. Robert Ileson, known to many as “Bob from Pike,” took the overall victory and grand prize, which includes a stay at Carriage House Inn in Downieville with sparkling wine awaiting, a dinner for two at La Cocina De Oro, and a breakfast at Cold Rush Cafe. Additionally, Bob gets to keep the coveted owl trophy named “Boo.” Bob has displayed incredible trivia knowledge year-round, often prevailing against teams with greater numbers while playing alone. The combination of Bob and his son, Ian, was a nigh unbeatable duo.

The final two podium positions were taken by staff of this newspaper in masthead order, with Carl J. Butz, Owner/Publisher, in second place and Ryan Steinwert, Editor, in third.

Boomtown’s Trivia Night was a welcome year-round event in an area where most are seasonal. Though not without its share of challenges and technical difficulties, the Lounge staff excelled at creating a fun and inviting atmosphere for the night throughout the year. The games were played in six rounds of five questions each, and correctly answering a question yielded your team points. Whichever team scored the highest total points at the end of the game won. At the end of each trivia night, the winning team was awarded three points towards the championship, which had to be distributed evenly amongst team members. Second place was awarded two points, and third place was awarded one. Participants could choose to be on a team or attempt to play alone.

Boomtown staff hope Trivia Night will come back even stronger in 2024, suggesting a possible two-night-a-week game. Boomtown is open to comments and suggestions on availability and interest in this year’s championship, which can be directed to Sonya Meline. The Messenger congratulates Bob on his championship and wishes 2024’s Trivia Night participants good luck!bobWinner.jpg2023 Trivia Champion Robert Ileson displaying his trophy, “Boo”
