NEVADA CITY — Nevada City has appointed Carrie J. Wright to the position of City Manager. Wright officially began work on March 2 following an announcement in January and an introduction at a City Council meeting.
Wright brings more than two decades of experience in public service and local government. Most recently, Wright served as Chief Strategy Officer at Sage Strategies LLC, a Sacramento-based consulting firm. Earlier leadership positions included the City of Stockton, UC Davis, and Cal Expo, where work focused on economic development, venue and event operations, public-private partnerships, and revenue generation. Wright also has experience as a small-business owner and public-sector leader, with expertise in municipal operations, economic development, housing, and community engagement.
Sean Grayson held the City Manager position before Wright. Nevada City and Grayson mutually agreed to part ways, with the separation taking effect on September 28, 2025. Joan Phillipe provided interim leadership during the transition period.
“I am honored by the opportunity to serve Nevada City as City Manager,” Wright stated. “This is a community with a deep sense of history and connection, and I see my role as a steward—supporting the great work already underway, listening closely, and helping the City thoughtfully prepare for the future while caring for what makes Nevada City special.” Wright also said during her introduction, “I’m looking forward to hitting the ground running with lots of opportunity to get out in the community — meet the business owners, residents, and really understand all of the issues and all of the great things.”
Residents, business owners, and partners can meet Wright at a meet-and-greet event on Wednesday, March 11, from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM at Nevada City Hall, located at 317 Broad Street. Light refreshments will be provided. The gathering takes place immediately before the regular City Council meeting, which begins at 6:30 PM.
Mayor Adam Kline encouraged attendance. “This is a great opportunity for the community to meet Carrie and begin building the working relationships that are so important in a community like Nevada City,” Kline stated. “Our City thrives when residents participate in civic life, and we encourage everyone to stop by, say hello, and welcome our new City Manager.”
