DOWNIEVILLE — Western Sierra Food Bank is a private non-profit charitable organization that has existed since 1988 and distributes 350-400 food baskets annually within western Sierra County. It operates strictly with food or cash donations only, and volunteers help with food purchasing, stocking, and distribution. It is funded by individual and organizational donations, including the Downieville Lions Club, the Downie Chapter of E. Clampus Vitus, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Downieville Assembly of God Church, and many individuals outside of our area as well. There are no paid staff or administrative costs. We distribute food baskets at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter as well as daily upon request. If you need food, you just have to contact Bette Jo or Frank Lang at 530-289-3644, and we will make sure that it happens. The Food Bank works with other community organizations, including Golden Rays, the Commodities Program, the Senior Lunch Program, the Miss Jody Community Thanksgiving Dinner, and Sierra County Social Services. The cost of food has increased in the last few years, and donations do not go as far as they did. The cost per basket has increased from $50 to $120 over the past five years. People and organizations continue to be very generous and supportive, and we can only do what we can, but if there is more support out there, we could use the additional donations.
