Five Shot Dead Outside the Messenger

Nevada Gunfighters performing the gunfight

Downieville Gold Rush Days brought to town outlaws and bounty hunters who inevitably clashed outside the St. Charles on Saturday. Two outlaw men were seen stumbling around the street, causing a scene and firing their sidearms toward passersby. After shots were heard in town, the Sheriff and Deputy confronted the men to give a stern warning and nothing more. Two more outlaw associates joined the posse in short order, and the group continued to cause trouble, even harassing a woman as she passed. Another stern visit from the Sheriff caused no change in the group’s actions. Witnesses saw a verbal dispute between the outlaws and another man, who the criminals gunned down coldly.

Soon after the first man was shot, a group of women, including the one who was harassed, confronted the outlaws and revealed their identities as bounty hunters. A gunfight soon began as the gang had warrants, good dead or alive. The posse died in seconds, and no bounty hunter woman was shot in the fight. The Sheriff was quick to congratulate the women on a good shoot.

This gunfight, set during Gold Rush times, was an event put on by the Nevada Gunfighters as part of Downieville Gold Rush Days. The spectacle was enjoyed by spectators lining Main Street, even if they did have to cover their ears when the blanks were fired.
