Give Credit When Due

October 16, 2025

Editor,

Although I remain a severe critic of our President, I must acknowledge that he has taken action that may help resolve centuries-old deadly conflicts in the Middle East. Should the current fragile truce eventually become a permanent end to hostilities in Gaza, he will have made an historical contribution to the future of all humanity and I, for one, would not begrudge him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2026.

I remain appalled by Mr. Trump’s immoral and/or illegal initiatives: soldiers in cities, baseless indictments of political “enemies,” rescission of funding approved by congress, inhumane treatment of suspected undocumented immigrants, and so much more. I believe his actions shatter our tradition of civil discourse and, more importantly, jeopardize the future of our democracy.

But I calm my passions to recognize that his “art of the deal” style may have done the trick in this case.

Thank you, Mr. President, for attempting to make peace and I hope, along with you, that your action creates a lasting, positive change in human affairs.
