With the regular season rapidly coming to a close, here are the most recent results and outlooks for the girls' basketball teams in northeastern California:
Bear River Bruins: On Wednesday of last week, theteam hosted Antelope’s Center Cougars and had an easy time securing a 72-22 victory. Then, last Friday night, the team played the Lincoln Fighting Zebras in a battle for second place in the Pioneer Valley League (PVL). Bear River lost this game, 29-42. However, on Monday of this week, the team dominated the Wheatland Pirates for the second time this season with a 71-40 victory. Last night, after our deadline, the team traveled to Sacramento for a contest against the Mira Loma Matadors, a team they beat 61-6 on 1/14. Thus, they remain tied with the Oakmont Vikings for third place in their conference. On 2/13, the Bruins will host the Vikings in the last game of the regular season, so this tie won’t last.
Chester Volcanos: This week, on Monday, 2/2, the Volcanos easily beat the Princeton Eagles (57-11). The next evening, the team dominated the CORE Butte Lynx (63-20). If the Volcanos repeat their 1/23 victory over the Los Molinos Bulldogs next Tuesday, they will have a chance to tie the Redding Christian Lions for first place. This opportunity comes in their last game of the regular season, on Friday, 2/13, in the Five Star League.
Colfax Falcons: With victories over the Lincoln Fighting Zebras, Center Cougars (Roseville), and Mira Loma Matadors since our last report, the Falcons have a two-game lead in the PVL. Since the Falcons beat all of their final four opponents earlier this season, the Bruins have an excellent chance of finishing the regular season on a 17-game win streak while winning the PVL championship.
Herlong Vikings: Last Thursday evening, 1/29, the Vikings traveled to play the Paradise Adventist Academy Cougars and lost, 18-48. Unfortunately, the odds of the team beating either one of their last two opponents this season, the Princeton Eagles and Loyalton Grizzlies, are poor. With one tenth grader and five ninth graders on the team’s eight-player roster, these games will provide experience of great value in the 2026-2027 season.
Lassen Grizzlies: On Friday of last week, the Grizzlies hosted the West Valley Eagles and were beaten, 34-67. Last night (after our deadline), the team was on their home court to face the Anderson Cubs, a team they narrowly lost to (40-41) back on 1/14.We will report the results of this game and the one they play against Redding’s University Prep Panthers tomorrow night, in next week’s edition.
Loyalton Grizzlies: The Grizzlies extended their winning streak to 11 games by outscoring the Westwood Lumberjacks 59-6 last Friday evening. Tomorrow night, with another win over the Pioneer League’s second-place unit, the Plumas Charter Warriors, the Grizzlies will secure the Pioneer League championship.
Modoc Braves: The Braves dominated both the Etna Lions and Mt. Shasta Bears, 67-35 and 65-29, respectively, since our 1/29 edition. Next, the Braves, 6-2 in the Shasta Cascade League (SCL), will travel to Weaverville on Saturday, 2/7, to defend their second-place standing in the SCL against the 5-2 Trinity Wolves. Having beaten the Wolves 57-40 at home on 1/23, the odds of the Braves remaining in second in the SCL on their return to Alturas are good.
Nevada Union Miners: The Miners lost to both Auburn’s Placer Hillmen (54-61) and Lincoln’s Twelve Bridges Raging Rhinos over the past week. Next, the team, now third in the Foothill Valley League, plays the Roseville Tigers tonight. Having beaten the Tigers, 60-55, back on 1/14, the Miners should have an 18-9 win-loss record when they close their regular season against the Yuba City Honkers on 2/12.
Placer Hillmen: Last Thursday night, the Hillmen extended their current winning streak to 11 games with a 61-54 victory over the Nevada Union Miners. Now, with a two-game lead in the Foothill Valley League (FVL) and their last two games of the season against teams they beat earlier this year by more than 40 points, it is easy to predict the team will soon be this year’sFVL champion.
Plumas Charter Warriors: The Warriors now have a four-game win streak after cruising past the Biggs Wolverines 50-36 on 1/28, and the Princeton Eagles forfeited on 1/30. Tomorrow night, the Warriors will hostthe Loyalton Grizzlies, a team that beat them 45-31 on 1/13. If the Warriors upset the Grizzlies, Plumas Charter will be tied for first place in the Pioneer League.
Portola Tigers: The Tigers followed up on their victory over the Maxwell Panthers on 1/27 with a convincing, 65-26, win over the Williams Yellowjackets on 1/30. Then, on Tuesday, 2/3, the Tigers faced their traditional rival, the Quincy Trojans, and were defeated, 36-47. Before our next edition, the Tigers travel to face the Biggs Wolverines on 2/6. Having lost to the Wolverines (34-51) back on 1/20, the Tigers will be hard-pressed to come home with their fifth victory of the season.
Quincy Trojans: After being outscored (65-45) by the Biggs Wolverines last Thursday evening, the Trojans pulled off a 47-37 win over the Portola Tigers on Tuesday of this week. Tomorrow night, the Trojans will be at home in their next-to-last game of the season against the Maxwell Panthers. Since the Panthers only edged past the Trojans by three points on 1/20, the Trojans have a good chance of putting together back-to-back victories.
Truckee Wolverines: Having outscored the Incline Highlanders (59-9) and Debbie Smith CTE Academy (50-7) since last week’s paper, the Wolverines faced the Sparks Railroaders last night (after our deadline). Since Truckee beat Sparks, 50-15, on 1/16, and overcame their final opponent of the season, the Wooster Colts, by 42 points on 1/20, I expect the Wolverines will finish up the season on a four-game winning streak and an 11-9 win-loss record.
Westwood Lumberjacks: Last Friday evening, the Loyalton Grizzlies handed the Lumberjacks a 59-6 drubbing. Unfortunately, the Lumberjacks’ woes are unlikely to be reversed when they play the Paradise Adventist Academy Cougars and Plumas Charter Warriors on 2/10 and 2/13, respectively.
