Nevada County Moves Election Operations to Grass Valley

NEVADA COUNTY — Nevada County will move election operations from its Nevada City office to the Ballot Processing Center in Grass Valley on Friday, October 2. The center will serve as the county’s early in-person voting location for the November 3 general election.

Early voting begins Monday, October 5, at 12740 Loma Rica Drive, near the Nevada County Airport. Voters can cast ballots there from 9 AM to 5 PM on weekdays through October 23, excluding county holidays. Ballots will also go in the mail to active registered voters on October 5.

Voters can continue to return ballots at the Nevada County Government Center, 950 Maidu Avenue in Nevada City. The parking-lot drop box will be open 24 hours a day and close at 8 PM on Election Day, according to the county’s voting schedule. In-person voting in the Government Center’s Providence Mine Room begins Saturday, October 24.

Registrar of Voters Armando Salud-Ambriz said bringing election work together at one location would help staff coordinate the activities involved in running an election. The county plans to return election operations to the Nevada City office after the election is certified.

“This is a pilot early voting location, and we want to hear from voters about their experience,” Salud-Ambriz said in the September 29 announcement.

The public may observe ballot opening, sorting, and signature verification at the processing center as ballots arrive. The county also offers online viewing through YouTube.

Voters may use any vote center in the county, according to the county voter guide. Staff can provide replacement ballots, update voter registration, and offer language assistance. The guide also lists accessible ballot-marking devices among vote-center services.

Voters who need voting assistance, including help arranging curbside voting, can call Nevada County Elections at 530-265-1298.

The Government Center and the Truckee Tahoe Airport Community Room, 10356 Truckee Airport Road, are the first two of nine vote centers opening across the county. Both will be open from 9 AM to 5 PM daily October 24 through November 2 and from 7 AM to 8 PM on Election Day.

Six more centers open October 31, including Western Gateway Park’s Buttermaker’s Cottage at 18560 Penn Valley Drive in Penn Valley. Their hours will be 9 AM to 5 PM October 31 through November 2 and 7 AM to 8 PM on Election Day.

The North San Juan Community Center, 29190 State Highway 49, will serve as a vote center on Election Day, November 3, from 7 AM to 8 PM.
