On George Bachels

Editor,
Like most, I enjoy Cory Peterman’s “Tracing the Footsteps of Our Ancestors.” In his [December 21st] account, he mentioned the George Bachels home. Thus, I was reminded of a true story: After George left his home, he spent many hours driving the back roads in his pickup truck. Occasionally, he would stop in at the Buckhorn in Sierra City for a beer. One evening, when nobody else was in the bar, he went out to his pickup and returned to show the bartender (Alec Ostrom) his secret bounty… three Folger coffee cans full of nuggets. I believe George had worked at the Brush Creek Mine. He told the bartender he was going to bury them behind the Sierra Buttes for safekeeping. Soon afterward, George passed away. Alec shared the account only with the family. Maybe Cory knows if the nuggets were ever recovered.
