On the Historical Society Fundraiser Event

2 min read

To the Editor,

A BLAST, a BALL, dare I say BITCHIN’… that is the overwhelming feedback from the Sierra County Historical Society’s fundraising cocktail party, held on October 10 at the iconic Shangri-La Bridge House.

Dressed in fabulous midcentury fashion, around 60 guests and volunteers enjoyed the stunning venue, the mellow music of Jim Bratt with Tunde Milliner, and nostalgic appetizers catered by Cindy and Glen Haubl of Sierra Pines Resort. Sipping classic cocktails and mocktails on the patio overlooking Jim Crow Creek—framed by spectacular fall foliage—made for a truly memorable evening.

A silent auction featuring 40 prizes donated by local individuals and businesses ran throughout the event. However, the true highlight came precisely at 6:30 PM with our gold raffle. Generously donated by an anonymous local miner/ SCHS supporter, three ounces of fine Sierra County gold were divided into five exciting prizes. A friend visiting from Chicago, Pam Owens, drew the winning tickets.

The lucky winners are:

• 1st Place (1.75 oz): Carl Butz, Downieville (who happened to be celebrating his birthday!)

• 2nd Place (0.50 oz): Mark Stuart, Applegate

• 3rd Place (0.25 oz): Ron Kliewer, Paradise

• 4th Place (0.25 oz): Tom Butt, Sierra City

• 5th Place (0.25 oz): John Reader, Nevada City

Proceeds from this event support SCHS in building much-needed display space at the Kentucky Mine Museum in Sierra City. We are deeply indebted to Tom DeJonghe for opening up his amazing home to us, and to innkeepers Diane and Rebecca for their invaluable help with the logistics.

Finally, a heartfelt thank you to our incredibly generous local business community and individual supporters: Autumn’s Butter Me Up Bakery, Buttes Resort, Carriage House Inn, Jane York Punneo, Ellen York, Louise Huebner, Rick Solinsky, Mark Stevenson, Mary Davey, Mary Jungi, Mary Nourse, Mary Wright, Pamela Owens, Pamela Payen, Ric Moorhouse, Sabrina’s at the Forks, Sardine Lake Resort, Nolan Smith, Chris Campbell, Katy Anderson, Sierra Country Store, Sierra County Land Trust, Sierra Hardware, and Sierra Pines Resort.

With gratitude,

Mary Nourse
