The United Nations: a Quiz

As I mentioned in this column a couple of weeks ago, October 24 is United Nations Day — next Tuesday. So, in honor of that day, I thought a quiz would be in order. I’ll give you a couple of weeks to think about it, do some research, and come up with your own answers — then return to it here in this column. So, forthwith:

  1. What was the predecessor organization to the United Nations?
  2. Where did the term “United Nations” originate?
  3. When, where, and how did the United Nations come into existence?
  4. How many nations were involved in creating the United Nations?
  5. What is the official creation date of the United Nations?
  6. What is the name of the document that founded the United Nations?
  7. What are the main bodies of the United Nations?
  8. What is the chief administrative officer of the United Nations called?
  9. How many people have served in that capacity, and who currently serves?
  10. What are the funds and programs of the United Nations?
  11. What are the United Nations’ specialized agencies?
  12. The United Nations has still other entities and bodies. Can you name them?
  13. And, there are yet other related organizations? What are they?
  14. How many current members nations are there in the United Nations?
  15. What is the design the United Nations flag, and what is its significance?
  16. Where is the United Nations headquartered?
  17. What are the official languages of the United Nations?
  18. How many times has the United Nation, its agencies, or staff been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize?
  19. Who is the United States’ current ambassador to the United Nations?
  20. What milestone document of the United Nations was adopted on December 10, 1948?

Wow! Lots of questions in this quiz! I’m guessing that it’s going to take multiple columns to provide all the answers. Well, I’m up for it, if you are…
