A camper reported overdue over Labor Day weekend was found safe and in good condition following a search in western Sierra County, the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office said September 9. The camper had extended the trip by a day without notifying family members, the office said.

The camper was staying at a remote lake, and concerns about possible medical issues and the location prompted the office to request help from Nevada County Search and Rescue and Care Flight. Search teams assembled at first light and began searching the area.

The office urged anyone extending a backcountry or camping trip to make every reasonable effort to notify family or friends of changed plans. “A simple notification can prevent unnecessary concern and avoid committing significant search-and-rescue resources to what ultimately turns out to be a non-emergency,” the office wrote. It thanked Nevada County Search and Rescue and Care Flight for their quick response.
