PLUMAS COUNTY — The City of Portola and the Plumas County Office of Emergency Services are advising residents to prepare for severe winter storms and flooding that are forecast for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the period from 10 PM December 22 through 10 AM December 26 for Plumas, Lassen, and eastern Sierra counties. Heavy snow is expected above 5500 feet starting Tuesday evening, with snow levels expected to fall to 4500-5500 feet by Christmas morning.

A flood watch has also been issued for the same area from Tuesday evening through Wednesday evening.

Sandbags for flood control are available to residents at the Portola City garage at 120 Main Street in Portola and at fire stations in Quincy, Graeagle, Chester, Lake Almanor, Hamilton Branch, and Indian Valley. Some local fire departments have been placed on standby in advance of the storm.
