RENO — Portola resident Max Abdulnour will compete in his first boxing event. The 14-year-old steps into the ring at Chapito’s Boxing Gym in Reno, Nevada, on April 4, with bouts beginning at 1 PM. Max has trained hard for years in preparation for amateur competition.

Max’s mom, Janett, a local barber and stylist who owns Janett’s Place Beauty and Barbering in Portola, signed her son up for boxing lessons when he was seven years old, and both she and Max have remained dedicated to training ever since. Janett has drawn inspiration from the bravery and courage Max has shown throughout, saying, “that’s what it takes to be a warrior in boxing.”
