08:10 - As the blotter begins with a Downieville bear issue trying to gain entry into a vehicle - citizens should be aware Sheriff Fisher wrote a strongly worded letter to Director Charlton Bonham of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, expressing his “deep concern and dissatisfaction” regarding what he perceives as a “total breakdown in communication and collaboration related to responding to numerous black bear issues in Sierra County.” Rest assured, dear locals, our Sheriff is on top of this issue!

11:06 - Accidental 911 call from Loyalton.

12:34 - Report of a dog barking for a long period of time in Downieville. I have lots of dog treats on my desk at the office - accessible to anyone who stops by to increase doggy morale.

13:19 - Downieville local, taking a nap on his couch, wakes up to a bear in his house staring at him. I can’t even imagine! No, I take that back! I can imagine! Fish and Wildlife – taxpayers expect more help from your agency!

13:50 - About thirty minutes later, the Sheriff’s Office gets another call about a bear making itself at home in a Downieville residence. Wonder if the porridge is too hot – or just right? Is the bed too soft, too hard – or just right? Downieville accommodations must be spot-on since the bears are making themselves at home… in our homes!

15:30 - Annual sex offender registration in Downieville.

15:39 - Report of a scam phone call in Downieville. In my experience, if you hear a bunch of chickens, hens, and roosters cackling off in the background and the caller asks about your insurance… it might be a scam! And if you ask them why their “office” has poultry roaming about, you might get cussed at before they hang up!

17:30 - Bear issue in – did you think Downieville? Nope. This time Sierraville.

22:54 - Vehicle stuck in the snow around Alleghany. A good Samaritan gave them a ride home.

Tuesday, May 14

15:40 - Report of possible Grand Theft in Sierra City.

16:15 - Report of possible elder abuse in Loyalton. Let’s hope it’s unfounded. Elder abuse… not cool!

16:33 - After dragging their ass on issuing a depredation permit, Fish and Wildlife finally issued said permit but their efforts were “Too little, too late.” The Sheriff did their job by presenting the federal trappers with the United States Department of Agriculture a “Declaration of Public Safety Black Bear” and got his depredation permit. The bear problem was resolved at this moment, and the trap was removed.

16:44 - Report of a domestic dispute in Downieville. Both parties were questioned and did not request any services from the Sheriff’s office. Glad it’s not a situation with our deputies where it is in other parts of the state – “Because I had to show up, I’m taking one of you to jail.” I never thought this was fair policing – just because a deputy had to show up on a domestic call, that someone is automatically heading to the slammer. Glad we don’t do that here!

22:11 - Ambulance requested in Loyalton.

13:47 - A Downieville refrigerator was ransacked by a…you guessed it- a bear! The bear got into the garage, and the rest is history!

14:02 - After the city was spelled “Loylaton,” the Loyalton Substation had its address corrected. Sidenote: A daily sidequest on social media involves redistributing what I consider hilarious memes and jokes, often sarcastic. I steal and share funny quips so my friends can laugh at least once during their day. However, I absolutely cannot share a joke, meme, or story – no matter if it is “pee your pants” hilarious with a typo. I can’t do it…especially the “your” instead of “you’re” when needed. Ughh. Heaven forbid I have a typo (and I have) in this highly esteemed paper…it is almost the death of me. Well, it’s pretty humbling. Good job on the address correction!

16:25 - Accidental 911 call in Loyalton.

10:51 - Report of a dog bite in Downieville. The disgruntled canine was visiting town with owners and the incident happened in front of Sabrina’s at the Forks. Ecstatic that Sabrina’s is back open! Her yearly sponsored MTB Season Opening Party is this Saturday 3 - 9 p.m.!

19:25 - One in Nevada was arrested on a Sierra County warrant.

21:34 - HOLY TOLEDO! It’s been a while! I’m chuckling! Cow in the roadway in Loyalton. I love cows! Don’t you? I love our farmers and ranchers… because I appreciate eating, and that is damn hard work – with no days off! I have often thought about going vegan, but there is something about the smell of bacon, the taste of bacon, a good juicy hamburger, and a sizzling hot steak. I just remembered that I wanted to try Yak meat! Okay, my stomach is rumbling. Maybe I will see if JADAA’s is open.

Sunday, May 19

12:01 - An individual came to the Sheriff’s Office for information on a “cold” hit and run case.

13:11 - Bear issue at a campsite in Sierra City. If it’s bad now, what will happen when the masses flood our town and leave their McDonald’s wrappers everywhere? I’m just going to sip my coffee and wait and see. May add some whiskey to my coffee while I wait. Side note: While some occasionally sip on something stronger than water… I had a new beer at the St. Charles in Downieville. Since they no longer can get my favorite beer due to logistical delivery issues (and Brad has tried!)… I was offered a Great White beer! It was pretty good, and I think Sourdough Jack would like it!

14:56 - Citizen’s assist in Loyalton. It would have “fit the bill” to end the blotter with another bear issue, but our county has had enough!

Total Reported: 50
