As we return from Wimbledon coverage by our tennis professional and proofreader par excellance Mary Johnsen, a new competition awaits in women’s soccer. The group stages of the Women’s World Cup are underway, where of the 32 teams, half will be eliminated before the knockout bracket rounds. The competition is hosted by New Zealand and Australia, with the final being held in Sydney on August 20th. So far, the United States is off to a strong start, beating Vietnam 3-0 and securing a draw against the Netherlands.

The Dodgers are now solidly ahead of the Giants by three games. The Giants lost six games in a row at the end of their road trip but, luckily, beat the worst team in the league, the A’s, to end the streak. The Giants defeated the A’s again on Wednesday and will move on to the Red Sox on Friday. According to Sports Illustrated, Shohei Ohtani of the Angels, now the league home run leader and the center of much speculation, will not be traded. Instead, the Angels will attempt a postseason run, sitting third in the AL West.

In NASCAR, Denny Hamlin took the lead of the HighPoint.com 400 at Pocono Raceway after a caution-filled race, giving him his second win of the season. The series will next go to Richmond Raceway in Virginia for the Cook Out 400. Indycar will next race in Nashville on August 6th for the Big Machine Music City Grand Prix, on a picturesque street circuit that delivered some great racing last year.
