We had a wonderful turnout for this year’s 4th of July annual races for kids of all ages despite the heat and the 4th being on a Tuesday. Putting on these races is definitely a group effort, and everyone’s help is truly appreciated. The Downieville Volunteer Fire Department/Auxiliary sponsors the 4th of July events with members volunteering countless hours obtaining the permits, closing and cleaning the streets, providing an excellent barbeque, muster and dance along with their regular jobs and we thank them for that. The Downievile Lion’s Club sponsored the parade and Dan and Ingrid organized the parade highlight of the fireless fireworks for which everyone is grateful and loves to participate in. There is a core group of volunteers who allow the races to happen each year. Official race starter, Jack Marshall did a great job as always despite a starter pistol that gave us trouble. Lee Adams did an amazing job announcing the races and keeping things moving and we truly appreciate his being conned into volunteering for this. We also appreciate Frank Lang for allowing us to use his PA system for the event. Line judges Ryan Lowery, Tony McCreary and Owen Behlke made the calls at the finish line and Randi McCreary, Hailey Lowery and Cindy McCreary awarded the prizes to the winners and participants. Gordon Bell made sure the tug of war rope was in good operating condition and Cora Dittrich manned the hardware store so the McCreary family could handle the event. Finally, a huge thank you to Jan Hamilton and Jack Marshall for their generous donations to the prize fund for the races and to Chris Strine for the use of his table. We had the race participants write their names for the paper, but we didn’t catch everyone’s last name and had a bit of trouble reading some handwriting but hopefully you know who you are and we apologize for any mistakes on your names. Please note categories were dependent upon the number of runners available in each group.
