TRUCKEE — The Placer County District Attorney has filed criminal charges following an incident in which a vehicle struck several people outside a Safeway grocery store in Truckee. The event occurred on Saturday afternoon, February 7, around 2:45 PM, in front of the store located on Donner Pass Road.

Members of the Tahoe Titans 12-and-under youth baseball team, along with parents, had set up a table outside the store to raise funds for an upcoming tournament trip. Reports indicate that several people, including children and adults, sustained injuries when a pickup truck drove into the area where the group had gathered. The Truckee Police Department says four victims, including children and adults, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Truckee Police Department officers arrested the driver, identified as Jonathan Noel Maurer, age 49, of Coalinga, California, at the scene. “Upon arrival, officers determined the act had been committed intentionally,” says the Department. Authorities booked him into the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility in Nevada City, initially on charges pertaining to assault with a deadly weapon likely to produce great bodily injury, felony vandalism, and violation of post-release community supervision terms.

On Tuesday, the Nevada County District Attorney’s Office filed formal charges against Maurer. These include eight counts of attempted murder, multiple counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and several sentencing enhancements alleging great bodily injury and prior criminal history. Maurer was arraigned in Nevada County Superior Court on February 10.

Nevada County District Attorney Jesse Wilson addressed the charges in a public statement. “The allegations that this act was intentional and directed at kids is hard to comprehend,” Wilson said. “Our office will work through the criminal justice process and, if the evidence supports the charges, do everything we can, to the fullest extent of the law, to hold this individual accountable, send a clear message that this behavior has no place in society, and protect the public from further harm.”

The statement also acknowledged the broader impact on victims, their families, and the Truckee community. The District Attorney’s Office expressed commitment to providing support through its Victim/Witness Assistance Unit.

Authorities thanked the Truckee Police Department, Truckee Fire Protection District, California Highway Patrol Truckee office, and California State Parks for their response. They also recognized community members who provided immediate aid at the scene.

The investigation remains active and ongoing, with officials noting limited ability to provide additional comments at this time. A GoFundMe campaign has been established by Tahoe Titans families to support the affected youth baseball team, and has already raised over $74,000.
