Barricaded Man Arrested After Standoff with NCSO

August 4, 2025

ROUGH AND READY — The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) announced last week the arrest of Brian Keith Crane, 60, of Rough and Ready, on July 29 following a domestic violence incident. The NCSO reports a woman called 911 around 7:10 PM on the day of the incident while fleeing from her residence in Rough and Ready. Deputies met with the woman at a safe location, where they learned she had been assaulted.

When deputies attempted to contact Crane at the residence, the NCSO reports he had barricaded himself inside. An NCSO deputy who serves as a professional crisis negotiator and former member of the Sheriff’s Critical Incident Negotiations Team was able to contact Crane by phone. After more than an hour, Crane agreed to surrender peacefully. Authorities arrested him for inflicting corporal injury, making criminal threats, elder/dependent abuse, assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm, and resisting/obstructing a peace officer.

Deputies confiscated nine firearms, ammunition, and rifle magazines from the residence. After a search warrant was issued and executed on July 30, officials removed two additional firearms from the home. The NCSO requested a no-bail enhancement for Crane, which was granted by the Nevada County Superior Court.
