CAMPTONVILLE — On the afternoon of Friday, September 26, a commercial vehicle fire (according to radio traffic) started a vegetation fire about a mile from Highway 49 south of Camptonville. Cal Fire responded, soon after requesting that the Pike City Fire Department assist with a water tender and fire engine. The incident was designated the Oregon Fire.

Around 1:40 PM, the fire was estimated to be one to three acres with a high rate of spread. Three helicopters were requested by incident command, and air attack began. Command also requested five more fire engines, along with additional hand crews and water tenders.

After continuous air attack and progress by firefighters on the ground, the fire was holding at around 3 acres with a low to moderate rate of spread at 2:50 PM. Around the same time, an evacuation warning was issued for one zone in Yuba County.

By 4:30 PM, the smoke plume from the Oregon Fire had noticeably weakened, and a hose lay had been completed around the fire’s perimeter. At 6 PM, the Tahoe National Forest reported that forward progress had been stopped at 6 acres. Mop-up took place over the weekend. The Tahoe Forest says the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
