DOWNIEVILLE — The annual Downieville Clamper Weekend will return from August 23rd through 25th. E Clampus Vitus 1849, whose members are known as “Clampers,” is a fraternal organization that has been active in the Downieville area since the 1800s, with the original purpose of providing aid to miners and their families. The modern Clampers focus on historical preservation, education, and charitable contributions.
The weekend gathering hosts the Clampers’ secretive initiation ceremony for new members, surrounded by feasts and parties. Maiden Lane in Downieville will be closed on August 23rd, with emergency vehicle parking only, from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
