Community

Last Saturday was a Community BBQ in the Sierra City Park. It was reminiscent of the 2014 community gathering for the sesquicentennial where everyone that attended got together in the park for a “whole town picture” that was rather like a “where’s Waldo” there were so many people in the photo. What really struck as an observation Saturday was the sense of community. People catching up and chatting with neighbors or acquaintances, kids riding bikes and playing corn hole; a lively volleyball game with a mixture of ages having a great time, and in general, camaraderie. There were new residents as well as long timers; retired people and business owners - a great mixture of sizes and shapes!
It would be easy to wax nostalgic and leave it at that; but a lot of the underlying conversations I heard was the positiveness about the future here in our little burg. Community certainly, but the outside world does exist and we are not unaware. Protecting our children so they can grow up and fly away to their new lives. Helping our neighbors as they age; reaching out to our businesses to ensure their stability; making sure our community grows in a beneficial way. These were the snippets of conversations I overheard or were a part of and it was not only refreshing but reassuring that Sierra City is unique; a rare gem tucked away in the midst of Sierra County (an even bigger gem), and a community with great people, potential and positiveness.
