DOWNIEVILLE — A larger-than-usual crowd attended Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting to see an agreement finalized between the Sierra County Public Works Department and McCuen Construction, Inc. for the Downieville Community Center Remodeling Project. Progress had stagnated after no contractor bids were received when the project was initially approved in December 2022, but the situation allowed the county to negotiate with contractors directly.

The awarded contract sets a fixed cost of $775,779.49, exceeding the previously set-aside funds by $139,660. Supervisor Lee Adams noted that while the price increase is costly, the Community Center became the county’s responsibility 70 years ago, and its maintenance is vital to the community. Adams and the Auditor’s Office believe the extra funds can be managed within the county’s budget.

The remodel includes extensive changes to both the interior and exterior of the building, including porch and balcony changes, installation of an ADA-compliant lift, reconfiguration of interior walls, a completely new kitchen, and new flooring and paint. All wiring and electrical systems will also be replaced.

After the Board’s unanimous approval of the contract and funds increase was met with applause by attending community members, Director of Transportation Bryan Davey apologized for the long process and thanked the community for its continued dedication to seeing it through. Construction is expected to begin immediately and should be completed within 140 working days.
