DOWNIEVILLE — On Saturday, the Downieville Fire Auxiliary hosted Holiday on Main, an annual craft fair event. The fair drew participants from Sierra County and beyond who sold jewelry, candles, clothing, artwork, pottery, and more. Santa was also present for photos and to hear children’s wishes at the Community Hall.

Local businesses also participated in the event, with many donating prizes for a raffle later in the day. Food was available from several local vendors, including soup prepared by Downieville School students and their families.

Following Holiday on Main, the Downieville School held its annual Christmastime play. Elementary and junior high students participated in two performances during the event. The first, performed by the younger students, focused on the value of Christmastime and gatherings with loved ones, with several dances choreographed to Christmas songs. The second play, by the older students, was a humorous tale about reindeer going on strike before Christmas. Succeeding the performances was the annual auction of donated baked goods benefiting the arts at Downieville School, which was hosted by Collin O’Mara-Green and raised several hundred dollars.

Capping off the day, the Downieville Lions Club hosted the lighting of Downieville’s Christmas tree next to the gazebo at Gold Rush Park. The honor of “flipping the switch” was given, of course, to Santa, who stayed for more pictures and greetings with children and families.
