Downieville Fire Press Release
October 24, 2025

A Downieville Fire dispatch radio.
Are you a calm, clear communicator who thrives under pressure? Do you want to support your local fire department and serve your community, but prefer to do so from behind the scenes? The Downieville Volunteer Fire Department is looking for dedicated individuals to join our team as volunteer dispatchers.
While our firefighters are on the front lines, our dispatchers are their eyes and ears. From receiving the initial emergency call to tracking units and relaying critical information, you’ll be the crucial link that ensures our first responders get to the right place at the right time. No previous dispatch experience is required—we provide all the necessary training.
As a volunteer home dispatcher, you will serve as the hub of our emergency response efforts. Your responsibilities will include:
Answering emergency and non-emergency calls, gathering critical details about the situation, and entering it into the record.
Dispatching the appropriate fire and EMS units to the scene.
Tracking and monitoring the location and status of all responding units to ensure safety and efficiency.
Relaying real-time information and updates from the scene to field units and to other departments as needed.
Maintaining connectivity with callers until help arrives.
Maintaining detailed records and logs of all dispatch activities.
Handling multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment.
Cool under pressure: Able to remain calm, focused, and professional when handling stressful or time-sensitive situations.
Excellent communicators: Possess clear and effective verbal and listening skills.
Detail-oriented: Meticulous in recording information accurately and efficiently.
Compassionate and empathetic: Have a genuine desire to help community members in their time of need.
Reliable and dedicated: Committed to attending shifts, even outside of regular business hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Volunteering as a dispatcher is a rewarding way to serve your community without the physical demands of being a firefighter. You'll gain a unique skillset and become a vital part of our fire department family.
Join us and be a part of something bigger than yourself. Your dedication helps save lives and protect our neighbors.
