DOWNIEVILLE — Downieville School and Sierra County Arts Council were delighted to host internationally celebrated American pianist Carolyn Enger last week for an intimate concert that allowed students a deep experience of world-class music. Ms. Enger is dedicated to bringing music to diverse audiences, and we were grateful that she was willing to travel the North Yuba River canyon to our mountain village all the way from her home in New York. Carolyn’s lyrical playing and heartfelt interpretations of classical favorites included Schubert and Debussy. Students showed great interest as Carolyn interacted with them and answered questions. Composer J. J. Hollingsworth, who founded SCARFF (Sierraville Cabin Artists Retreat for Food and Fun), was also there as Carolyn played J.J.’s original tunes, invoking images of sack races and vast landscapes. SCARFF hosts classical piano performances in Sierraville a few times a year. These concerts are open to the public, and the Arts Council posts invitations on our Facebook page. Thank you to Carolyn, J.J., and Lindsay McIntosh of Musica Sierra for bringing this opportunity to our school. Arts Education in Sierra County is funded through grants from the California Arts Council. Information at www.sierracountyartscouncil.org.
