Downieville Warriors Triumph in First Home Volleyball Match

DOWNIEVILLE — Downieville High School has successfully formed a junior varsity women’s volleyball team for the current season — a significant achievement for the small school. On Tuesday, the Downieville Warriors competed in their inaugural home match against the Loyalton Grizzlies, securing a decisive victory by two sets to none. With this win, the team boasts an undefeated record of two wins, having previously defeated the Portola Tigers on Monday night.

The first set against Loyalton was closely contested, with the Warriors edging out a 25-23 victory. A critical moment occurred when Abbey Daniel and Katy Nevarez both dove to keep the ball in play, setting up Jay Malone to score the winning point. The second set saw Downieville dominate, concluding with a score of 25-14. In their earlier match against Portola, the Warriors also prevailed in two sets, each ending 25-14.

The Downieville Warriors junior varsity roster includes the following players: #15 – Kai Evans, #12 – Anahy Nevarez, #11 – Katy Nevarez, #5 – Jay Malone, #13 – Gabby Nevarez, #4 – Kaydence Stringer, #2 – Abbey Daniel, and coach – Brianna Roen. Each athlete contributed to Tuesday’s win, guided by Coach Roen’s leadership.

After a recent scheduling adjustment, the Warriors’ next match is tentatively set for Friday, October 15, at 3 PM at Quincy High School against the Trojans. Then, the Warriors will have a rematch against the Grizzlies in Loyalton on Tuesday, October 21. Next, the team plays a two-game series against the Herlong Vikings. The first will be at Herlong on Wednesday, October 22, and the second at home on Monday, October 27. The remainder of the season’s schedule is still being finalized, with updates expected soon.
