EL DORADO COUNTY — The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office announced the passing of K9 Apollo on April 16, 2026. The six-year-old dog suffered an unexpected medical emergency after an exercise session at home. Deputies rushed Apollo to an emergency veterinarian, where surgeons performed an operation. Apollo did not survive the procedure. He died surrounded by his handler’s family, members of the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit, and personnel from allied law enforcement agencies.
Apollo arrived in the county as a purebred German shepherd imported from the Czech Republic. He began his law enforcement career in November 2020, at 10 months old, alongside Deputy Brad Hellam. The dog received cross-training in handler protection and narcotics detection. Officials credited Apollo with numerous physical apprehensions of dangerous criminals. They add that his presence alone prompted many suspects to surrender peacefully.
The canine served as a valuable resource for communities throughout El Dorado County. Apollo performed apprehension and detection duties during patrol operations. He also participated in demonstrations at local schools and public events. Observers noted his calm demeanor during routine interactions. When required, Apollo displayed laser-focused seriousness in high-stakes situations. He functioned as both an effective sheriff’s K9 and a loving family dog at home.
