SACRAMENTO — On March 26, Assemblywoman Heather Hadwick addressed the California State Assembly floor to recognize Nevada County Sheriff Shannan Moon and members of the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team. Hadwick described the team’s work as life-saving and expressed deep gratitude for their commitment in rural communities.
Hadwick explained that search-and-rescue teams respond to thousands of calls each year, “Often exceeding 5000 missions annually, providing critical aid to lost, injured, and endangered individuals in some of the most challenging terrains and conditions imaginable.” She noted that the teams consist largely of highly trained volunteers who stand ready at all hours, “Putting service above self.” Their missions carry added weight because responders often search for neighbors, friends, and members of their own tight-knit communities.
Hadwick focused special attention on the team’s response to the tragic February avalanche near Truckee in Nevada County. She stated that, in the face of extreme weather, unstable snowpack, and dangerous conditions, the teams carried out a complex, urgent operation, saying, “Their swift actions led to multiple rescues, saving lives that might otherwise have been lost.” At the same time, the incident served as a solemn reminder of the risks present in California’s backcountry. Hadwick says that while lives were tragically lost, search and rescue teams were able to bring closure to families.
Hadwick extended condolences on behalf of the Assembly. “We extend our deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives,” she said, praising the team’s professionalism, courage, and seamless coordination with regional partners.
Hadwick named several team members present in the chamber and gallery. She recognized Sheriff Shannan Moon, Scott Montgomery, Josiah Boning, Alexis Dunn, Sergeant Dustin Moe, and Grace Van Winkle. Additional team members present were also recognized. Hadwick asked colleagues to join her in welcoming the group and expressing profound gratitude for their extraordinary service to Nevada County and the state of California.
