DOWNIEVILLE — A mountain biker who became stranded due to unexpected snow conditions on a trail above Downieville was safely rescued through a coordinated helicopter hoist operation, the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office reports.
According to the Sheriff, the rider encountered snow while attempting Butcher Ranch Trail and deviated from the established path. Unable to return safely or self-rescue, the individual used a satellite communication device to request assistance.
Deputies from the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office responded to the call for help. A California Highway Patrol (CHP) helicopter crew, based at Auburn Airport, was dispatched and en route picked up a Helicopter Rescue Technician in Nevada City.
The crew located the stranded biker from the air. The helicopter then landed briefly at the Downieville School field, where personnel reconfigured the aircraft for hoist operations.
The rescue proceeded successfully, with the mountain biker hoisted into the helicopter and transported back to Downieville. No injuries were reported in connection with the incident.
The Sierra County Sheriff’s Office noted that backcountry conditions in winter can shift rapidly. The Office advises anyone planning remote activities during colder months to carry proper clothing, emergency supplies, and reliable communication equipment. The Sheriff’s Office thanked the CHP Air Operations unit and involved personnel for their professional response, which ensured a positive outcome.
