A logging helicopter takes off from a landing area near Downieville.
GOODYEARS BAR — Familiar to Goodyears Bar residents, a helicopter logging project is underway just west of Downieville. The work began in late September 2025 with tree fallers cutting designated trees, and helicopter operations followed in October to handle the steep terrain. Helicopters are constantly audible in the area during operations, and can be seen carrying logs above the North Yuba River in Goodyears Bar.
As part of the “Sleighville Project,” the operation focuses on thinning dense and hazardous vegetation across 172 acres within the Tahoe National Forest. Helicopters transport the removed materials from the cutting sites on challenging slopes. Yuba River District Ranger Tom Parrack says the operation is on track to wrap up by the end of the year and apologizes if residents have concerns.

For safety, the project has led to several closures in the vicinity. The North Yuba Trail west of Goodyears Bar remains closed, though access from Rocky Rest is still permitted. Additionally, Mountain House Road is closed daily between Goodyears Bar and Mountain House during operational hours.
