High School Baseball – 3/19
Roundup of early-season performances and upcoming games for high school baseball teams in the region.
High school baseball games began in mid-February for most schools in northeastern California. Thus, we already have a good perspective on the prospects for the teams we’ll be reporting on through early May. Here’s what we know so far:
Bear River Bruins: Off to a hot start, the Bruins were winners of all but one of the nine games they have played and are tied for first place with the Wheatland Pirates and Marysville Indians in the Pioneer Valley League. Yesterday, after our deadline, the team faced Antelope’s Center Cougars, a team with 4 wins and 5 losses so far this season. Next week, I expect to report that the Bruins extended their current win streak to 7 games.
Chester Volcanos: With only three seniors and no juniors amongst the team’s 11-player roster, this young team has won only one of the four games they’ve played in 2026. Today, 3/19, the team has two games: one against the Hamilton Braves and another against the Portola Tigers at a tournament in Biggs. Their opponent in the third game of this event will be determined by the results of these contests. Next Tuesday, the Volcanoes will travel to play the Loyalton Grizzlies at 3 PM.
Colfax Falcons: This 15-player team has won five of its nine games so far this season. Yesterday, again after our deadline, the Falcons started a two-game series against the Lincoln Fighting Zebras and will have to up their game significantly to outscore this much higher-ranked opponent.
Lassen Grizzlies: Susanville’s Grizzlies will carry a five-win, three-loss record when they start playing a tournament in Yreka tomorrow with a game against the Mt. Shasta Bears. With a slightly higher MaxPreps.com ranking, 255 versus 312, the Grizzlies have to be favored to start the tournament with a win.
Loyalton Grizzlies: Following a 12-2 victory over the Portola Tigers to start the season on 3/2, the Grizzlies were outscored by a total of 15 runs during their next four games. Thus, when they start a set of four games at a tournament in Biggs this morning against the Hamilton Braves, the team will be an underdog looking to pull off an upset and end their four-game losing streak.
Modoc Braves: The Braves began the 2026 season on 3/3 with a tough, 5-6, loss against Redding’s Shasta Wolves. Then they lost, 0-10 to both Susanville’s Lassen Grizzlies and Eureka’s St. Bernard Crusaders. These losses were followed by another heartbreaking defeat when the Lost River Raiders of Merrill, OR, scored four runs in the last two innings to edge the Braves, 4-3. Yesterday afternoon, 3/18, after our deadline, the 11 players of the Braves’ roster hosted Oregon’s Lakeview Honkers in hopes of ending a four-game losing streak.
Nevada Union Miners: After winning their first game of the season against the Marysville Indians on 2/21, the Miners lost their next three games by a total of seven runs. Then, the 17-member team won their next three games before being outscored, 15-12, by the River Valley Falcons of Yuba City last Friday. On Monday of this week, however, the team boosted its season’s record to 5 wins and 4 losses with a 9-7 victory over the Del Campo Cougars. Yesterday and tomorrow, they will face Del Campo again with the intent of sweeping this year’s series against the school where Dusty Baker played before starring for the Atlanta Braves and the Los Angeles Dodgers, and went on to manage five different major league teams that won division titles.
Placer Hillmen: With a 1-9 loss at home to the Roseville Tigers on Monday of this week, the Hillmen’s record for the season fell to 5 wins and 3 losses. Yesterday (yes, again after our deadline), the Hillmen traveled to Roseville for the second game of this year’s three-game series with the Tigers. Given Roseville’s 7-2 record for the season, the Hillmen will be hoping to upset and gain first place in the Foothill Valley League.
Plumas Charter Warriors: In their first three games of the season, the Warriors posted losses. However, last Friday, 3/13, the team rebounded by sweeping a doubleheader against the Fall River Bulldogs. Tomorrow, the Warriors travel to Biggs for a tournament with games against the Biggs Wolverines and Modoc Braves on Friday and another game on Saturday against a to-be-determined opponent.
Portola Tigers: Following four straight losses to start the season, the Tigers beat the Burney Raiders by scores of 14-1 and 13-8 last Friday. Tomorrow, the Tigers will travel to Biggs for games against the Chester Volcanoes, Burney Raiders, and a team to be determined by the results of those games.
Quincy Trojans: In a couple of days, on Saturday, 3/20, the Trojans will travel to the Biggs Tournament to face the Modoc Braves at 10 AM. Given the Braves’ winless record in the first four games of their season, Quincy has a good chance to have a 5-4 record before they take the field at 2:30 PM to play the Fall River Bulldogs.
Truckee Wolverines: After posting four wins and two losses to begin their season, the Wolverines traveled to Fernley, NV, for three games last week. Unfortunately, Truckee lost all three games (3-13, 5-7, and 3-4). Tomorrow, the Wolverines travel to take on the Wooster Colts, a team ranked slightly lower by MaxPreps.com, for a three-game series running into Saturday, 3/21.
