DOWNIEVILLE – Highway 49 was back open in both directions as of 4 PM Thursday, November 5, after an excavator fell from a trailer about three miles east of Downieville, according to the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office.

The office said it learned of the incident around 2 PM. The excavator had fallen from a lowboy trailer traveling southbound.

Caltrans had closed the highway just north of its yard to give the truck driver room to reload the excavator, the Sheriff’s Office said.
