Jack Marshall, 86, of Downieville, California, passed away on November 9, 2025. He was born on January 7, 1939, in Oakland, California, and spent nearly eight decades building a life, a family, and a legacy in the small mountain town he loved.
Jack is survived by his wife, Linda Marshall; his son, Kevin Marshall; his brothers, Dave Marshall, Ernie Teague, and Melvin Teague; as well as his grandchildren, Kursten O’Donnell, Tyler Marshall, Ryan Marshall, and Kylie Coonrod. He was preceded in death by his son, Don Marshall; his father, Phillip George Ramsell; and his mother, Evelyn Cooper.
Jack dedicated his career to the United States Forest Service, where he was known for his hard work, sharp instincts, and big-hearted presence in the woods and in the community. He also proudly served in the United States Army, carrying that sense of duty with him throughout his life.
In Downieville, folks knew Jack as the guy who kicked off the Fourth of July foot races with a blast from his gun, a moment that became a piece of town tradition. He had a way of making every conversation feel like catching up with an old friend. Friendly and talkative. Jack was the kind of person people remembered.
A celebration of Jack’s life will be held on May 23, 2026, at the community hall. His family invites all who knew him to join in honoring a man who left a lasting mark on both the mountains he cared for and the people who loved him.
