Editor,
The interest is immediate when your bread and butter is affected. Now KKK, our very own House of Representative, sees the advantage of a non-partisan commission to set House of Representative lines for districts. We are in Congressional District Three. It has been a very red (Republican) district. Texas does not affect him, except it does. He was not at all concerned about the typical demand by his leader to find 5 more Republican U.S. Congressional seats in Texas. That would be accomplished by that grand old (GOP) activity used by many states — gerrymandering. Texas says to the Republican national leader, “OK, sure. Five more Republican seats coming up.” And, they did it.
Hold on — Gavin Newsom says, that’s not fair for our country to put the proverbial thumb on the scale so that the outcome is weighted in your favor. Newsom says California will change its districts, too, by suspending the lines drawn by the bi-partisan commission to counter those five seats demanded by dictator Trump. (Very Groundhog Day of him to demand what will give him the electoral win and the majority US House. We saw Trump do the same kind of thing last election, except he demanded it of an election official in another state. That election official had the integrity to say, “NO”. He had to say it more than once, because like a demanding toddler, Trump does not hear or deal with the word “no” said to him.)
Texas does their thing over the loud protest and breaking of quorum by Texas Democrats. GCN follows through by proposing Prop 50, and having it passed by the California legislature to put on the November ballot. It will be decided by all the voters who decide to show up. Texas voters did not get the same fair deal. Still, Kevin Kiley thinks it is unfair. Maybe because his historically safe seat may not be so safe anymore. Texas has not and will not put their gerrymandering before voters, and it has no timeline for ending, whereas California will go back to a non-partisan commission after the next census. Who then is being upfront and showing it by their actions? I believe it is California Democrats, not Texas Republicans.
