Local High School Baseball – 4/16
Roundup of recent results and upcoming matchups for northeastern California high school baseball teams.
The results of recent games for the northeastern California teams we’re following, along with outlooks for upcoming games, are posted below:
Bear River Bruins: During last week’s non-conference tournament, the Bruins lost to Atascadero’s Walnut Mustangs, the Village Christian Crusaders of Sun Valley, CA., and the San Leandro Pirates by 4-8, 4-11, and 0-2, respectively. Yesterday, after our deadline, the Bruins returned to Pioneer Valley League play by starting a two-game series against the Colfax Falcons. Comparing the Bruins’ MaxPreps.com ranking, 405th best in California, to the Falcons’ 480th ranking, the odds of the Bruins winning both games are good.
Chester Volcanoes: This week, on Tuesday, 4/14, the Volcanoes took advantage of three errors and four unearned runs provided by the Portola Tigers to win by a score of 8-6. Tomorrow, 4/17, the Volcanoes start Five Star League play on the road against the Los Molinos Bulldogs. It will be a major upset if the Volcanoes win this game.
Colfax Falcons: In their first Pioneer Valley League (PVL) competition of the 2026 season, the Falcons split a two-game series with Antelope’s Center Cougars. Last Wednesday, 4/8, the Falcons beat the Cougars, 7-6, with the help of three unearned runs. Then, on Monday of this week, the Cougars won 4-3 when three errors by the Falcons led to four unearned runs.
Lassen Grizzlies: Last Wednesday, 4/8, the Grizzlies were beaten, 0-10, by the Yuba City Honkers. Yesterday, after our deadline, the Grizzlies traveled to play the Anderson Cubs with hopes of halting their nine-game losing streak. Today, the team is having a rematch with Redding’s University Prep Panthers, a team that narrowly beat the Grizzlies, 5-4, back on 4/3. Tomorrow, Susanville’s Grizzlies will be at home to play the Anderson Cubs for the second time in three days.
Loyalton Grizzlies: In a three-game tournament held in Alturas last Thursday and Friday. Loyalton’s Grizzlies started well with a 4-3 victory over the Lost River Raiders of Merrill, OR. The next day, however, the team was defeated, 4-9, by Alturas’s Modoc Braves and 1-12 by the Klamath Falls, OR, Mazama Vikings. On Monday of next week, the Grizzlies travel to Trinity County for a doubleheader against the Hayfork Timberjacks, a team ranked only slightly lower by MaxPreps.com.
Modoc Braves: At home during last week’s tournament, the Braves won all four games they played. This week, on Tuesday, 4/14, the team shut out the Fall River Bulldogs, 9-0, and is only one game out of first place in the Shasta Cascade League.
Nevada Union Miners: Since our last report, during a tournament held from 4/8-4/10, the Miners lost 2-12 to the San Leandro Pirates, edged out the Nipomo Titans, 11-10, and overwhelmedthe Lompoc Braves, 17-10. This week, on Monday, 4/13, the Miners returned to Foothill Valley League competition and were outscored, 11-1, by the Roseville Tigers. Yesterday, after this paper went to press, the team had a rematch with the Tigers. And tomorrow, the two teams will face off again.
Placer Hillmen: With a 4-2 victory over Roseville’s Oakmont Vikings and an 8-0 shutout of the Twelve Bridges Raging Rhinos since our last edition, the Hillmen rode into yesterday afternoon’s rematch with the Raging Rhinos with a nine-gamewinning streak. The odds of the Hillmen adding two games to their win streak while playing the Raging Rhions yesterday and next Monday look very good.
Plumas Charter Warriors: Today, after our deadline, the Warriors open their Evergreen League season with a doubleheader on the road against the Westwood Lumberjacks. Given Westwood's winless record this season, I think the Warriors have a very good chance of taking both ends of the doubleheader.
Portola Tigers: Earlier this week, on Tuesday, 4/14, the Tigers lost their fifth straight game, 8-6, to the Chester Volcanoes. Unfortunately, the Tigers' woes are likely to continue in tomorrow’s doubleheader against the much higher-ranked Hamilton Braves. Portola’s prospects for a win against the Quincy Trojans next Tuesday are only a little bit higher.
Quincy Trojans: Tomorrow, 4/17, after two weeks away from competition, the Trojans host the Biggs Wolverines fora doubleheader. Given Bigg’s overall season record, 14 wins and only 2 losses, it appears the Trojans will have a hard time halting their current four-game losing streak.
Truckee Wolverines: Last week, the Wolverines lost 9-14 in extra innings in the first game of a three-game series against the Spring Creek (NV) Spartans. The next day, the Wolverines came back to grab a close 6-5 victory over the Spartans before losing the rubber game, 4-2. Tomorrow, at home, Truckee begins another three-game set, this time against the Churchill County Greenwave of Fallon, NV. With both teams carrying almost identical overall season records, placing any bets on the outcome of this series would be unwise.
