Local High School Baseball – 4/9

Roundup of recent scores and upcoming matchups for northeastern California high school baseball teams.

The results of last week’s games for the northeastern California teams we’re following, along with outlooks for upcoming games, are posted below:

Bear River Bruins: Last Thursday and Friday, the Bruins were swept, 7-8 and 0-6, by the strong Lincoln Fighting Zebras. Then, on Tuesday of this week, the team edged out Redding’s University Prep Panthers, 2-1. Yesterday (after our deadline), the Bruins played Atascadero’s Walnut Mustangs, and today, 4/9, Bear River will face the Village Christian Crusaders of Sun Valley, CA., before closing out this week’s tournament play against the San Leandro Pirates tomorrow.

Chester Volcanoes: Unfortunately, as we go to press, the results of the Volcanoes' games last Friday at the diamond for Trinity County’s Hayfork Timberjacks remain unavailable. We hope to post the results to these games, along with Chester’s game next Tuesday against the Portola Tigers, in next week’s edition.

Colfax Falcons: To finish last week’s tournament, the Falcons lost, 0-9, to Mountain Crest Mustangs of Hyrum, Utah, before defeating the Oceanside Pirates, 5-3. Yesterday, 4/8, the team began Pioneer Valley League (PVL) competition by hosting Antelope’s Center Cougars, and these teams will meet again tomorrow in Antelope.

Lassen Grizzlies: After a heartbreaking, nine-inning, 4-5 loss to Redding’s University Prep Panthers last Friday, the Grizzlies went on to be defeated in tournament play by Lincoln’s Twelve Bridges Raging Rhinos (2-17) and Fighting Zebras (8-10), plus the Marysville Indians. Yesterday, they took the field in the tournament's final game against the Yuba City Honkers. The results of this game, as well as the outcome of next Tuesday’s Northern League contest with the Anderson Cubs will run in next week’s paper.

Loyalton Grizzlies: Today, 4/9, these Grizzlies begin a three-day tournament in Alturas against the Lost River Raiders of Merrill, OR, the Modoc Braves, and a team to be determined by the results of the tournament’s first two games. Then, next Tuesday, the team begins Evergreen League competition with a doubleheader on the road against the Hayfork Lumberjacks.

Modoc Braves: Last Friday, the Braves started Shasta Cascade League play with a doubleheader against the relatively strong Mt. Shasta Bears, winning the opener, 7-5, before losing the second game, 1-3. Today, the team will be at home to begin a non-conference tournament against the Loyalton Grizzlies and Fall River Bulldogs.

Nevada Union Miners: Since our last report, the Miners lost twice to Lincoln’s Twelve Bridges Raging Rhinos, 1-11 and 4-10, on 4/1 and 4/3, respectively. Then, on Tuesday of this week, the Miners tied Newport Beach’s Pacifica Christian Tritons, 6-6. Yesterday, 4/8, the team faced the San Leandro Pirates. The results of this game, today’s game with the Nipomo Titans, and tomorrow’s contest with the Lompoc Braves will be reported in next week’s edition of the paper.

Placer Hillmen: After a 2-0 victory over Palo Cedro’s Foothill Cougars last Wednesday, 4/1, the Hillmen had a week off. Today, 4/9 at 7 PM, the team will be at home to play Roseville’s Oakmont Vikings, a game I expect the Hillmen to win.

Plumas Charter Warriors: With their 4/13 doubleheader against the Tulelake Honkers postponed until 4/23, the Warriors will now open their Evergreen League season next Thursday, 4/16, with a doubleheader on the road against the Westwood Lumberjacks. Given Westwood's record this season, the odds of the Warriors sweeping these two games are good.

Portola Tigers: Beginning their Mid-Valley League (MVL) season last Friday, 4/3, with 1-9 and 1-12 losses against the Maxwell Panthers, the Tigers are hoping to halt a four-game losing streak next Tuesday, on the road, in a game against the Chester Volcanoes.

Quincy Trojans: In the first game of a doubleheader last Thursday, 4/2, against the Hamilton Braves, the Trojans were trailing 1-12 when they came to bat in the bottom of the seventh (final) inning. While the Trojans scored nine runs in the inning, this outburst was not enough to beat the Braves. In the second game on 4/2, the team lost 1-11. After a two-week break, the Trojans play a doubleheader against the Biggs Wolverines on 4/17, a week from tomorrow.

Truckee Wolverines: While Truckee came close to upsetting the Elko Indians last Friday, they surrendered a run in the bottom of the seventh and lost, 10-11. The next day, the team was beaten by Elko, 0-10 and 1-11. Tomorrow, the Wolverines, back at home, start a three-game set looking to upset another strong team, the Spring Creek (NV) Spartans.
