While the above-pictured individuals do not consider themselves “heroes”, residents of Sierra City, Downieville, and the surrounding areas certainly do! At the “ready” to respond to medical emergency and fire calls, they volunteer to save lives and property thus keeping our communities safer and residents feeling more secure. On Wednesday, September 8th, members of Sierra City’s Harmony Lodge, #164, Free and Accepted Masons, held a luncheon, on Sabrina’s Patio at the Forks, to honor these four individuals for their service as members of the Sierra City and Downieville Volunteer Fire Departments. Lodge Master, Shaun Metroka introduced the following individuals: Sierra City Fire Chief, Scott Hall, who presented the awards to Sarah Kubley and Steve Traverso, followed by Downieville’s Senior Fire Captain, Robert Hall, who honored Stephen Folsom and Dianne Wharff. Both presenters noted that these individuals serve their departments in other capacities, as well, and are invaluable to the operation of each department, often working together to give needed assistance to area residents. The Masons began this tradition in 2018; however, due to COVID, the event was suspended for a couple of years. What a great way to recognize those individuals who serve our communities with their time and talents and what a privilege to have these volunteers, along with their peers, willing to respond as soon as they hear “the call”!
