CHESTER — Voters in Plumas County’s District 3 will select a replacement in the June 2 primary for retiring Supervisor Tom McGowan. Two candidates, Shawn McKenzie and Douglas Brower, are running to replace McGowan. The Mountain Messenger invited both candidates to provide statements on their backgrounds and priorities in their campaigns. Shawn McKenzie’s statement appears below. Douglas Brower did not respond to our invitation.
Shawn McKenzie
My name is Shawn McKenzie, and I currently hold the position of Chief Executive Officer for Seneca Healthcare District hospital and clinic. I will be retiring from my healthcare position in November of 2026. Having been raised in Chester and the surrounding Lake Almanor basin, my wife and I returned nearly six years ago to live in the area we love.
I have a very deep understanding of the issues affecting our district, and other communities within the county. If elected, my goal is to be the voice of District 3 and to represent the Lake Almanor basin at the county level. My career in healthcare has given me direct exposure to federal, state, and local regulatory and fiscal issues. Through my experiences as a healthcare executive, I bring a wealth of experience in strategic leadership, fiscal management, and community-focused solutions.
I am dedicated to government accountability and transparency by ensuring decisions are made in a public forum and reflect the best interests of our community. The public deserves trustworthy leadership, clear communication, and a county government that operates with the utmost integrity.
I have the proven experience, and the courage to do what is right, even when the decision is difficult. Together, we can build a stronger, more united county where all communities thrive with well-researched sustainable growth, transparent governance, and a shared vision for the future.
