On Jessica Morse and Coverage

June 17, 2024

Dear Editor,

We begin with some words of thanks. First, thank you to the roughly 40 people who attended all or part of the Sierra County Picnic with Congressional District 3 candidate Jessica Morse on June 1 in Sierra City. Second, thank you to Jessica for being willing to spend some quality time in our small corner of the universe. And, third, thank you to The Mountain Messenger for being present at the event, and then giving it front-page coverage afterwards.

We did notice that, in the article, the writer stated twice that Jessica “claimed” certain achievements. The use of that qualifier might indicate some question in the mind of the reporter on the veracity of what Jessica said. Those judgments are the right of each person. We have no such qualms. Our experience of Jessica is one of an ethical, moral, and honest person who truly wants to represent the people of this district — and is willing and able to make that her first priority and loyalty.

When it comes to veracity, we would remind readers that it was the person currently serving as our representative in Congress who, in the only debate to which he agreed two years ago, twice refused to state his stance on abortion, because (in his own words) “this is a state issue”. However, it was only eight days after being sworn into Congress that he voted in favor of two anti-abortion bills. We will be reading with interest to see what qualifiers might be used, when the paper reports on his upcoming visit to Sierra County.

We would also remind readers that, if you want someone in Congress who truly knows the issues we face on a daily basis, and is willing to actually represent our people and our needs, the choice is clear: vote Jessica Morse for Congress.
