ROSEVILLE — Eric James Abril received a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole on March 25. Placer County Superior Court Judge Michael Jones imposed the term after Abril pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, attempted murder of a peace officer, and kidnapping.

California Highway Patrol officers approached Abril at Mahany Park in Roseville on April 6, 2023, to serve a search warrant linked to an earlier freeway shooting. Abril opened fire on the officers and struck one in the chest, though the bullet stopped in the officer’s ballistic vest. Abril then fled into a nearby field where he encountered James MacEgan, 72, and his wife Patricia MacEgan, 71, who had taken cover in the grass near a creek.

Abril shot and killed James MacEgan before seizing Patricia MacEgan as a hostage. He dragged her by the ankles into the creek, held her by the hair, and pressed a gun to the back of her head while using her as a human shield. During the standoff, Abril shot Patricia MacEgan in the arm after growing frustrated with law enforcement demands, an act captured on drone video. Officers surrounded Abril, who surrendered after being wounded in the gun battle.

Abril entered custody and received hospital treatment at Sutter Roseville Medical Center for possible seizure activity. He escaped the facility on July 9, 2023, while under single-deputy supervision and remained at large for 33 hours until a manhunt ended with his recapture in Rocklin. Court proceedings advanced through a preliminary hearing in 2024, followed by a not-guilty-by-reason-of-insanity plea in February 2025, which delayed the trial. Abril changed his plea to guilty on March 4, 2026, resolving all charges without a full trial.

The court imposed life without parole for the murder of James MacEgan, along with additional life terms for the attempted murder of the peace officer and the kidnapping. “I can’t give you true justice,” Judge Jones told the family. “True justice would take you back to an hour or two before this incident happened and have you in a different place. I can’t do that. So, we rely on the courts to give the next best opportunity to find justice for what has happened. I am sorry for what has happened to you and your loved ones.”

Placer County District Attorney Morgan Gire described the case as one of extreme disregard for human life. “This case reflects the definition of an extreme and callous disregard for human life, leaving one victim dead, another permanently injured, and family and a community forever impacted,” Gire said. Chief Deputy District Attorney David Tellman, who prosecuted the case with Supervising Deputy District Attorney Kalin Everett, called the sentence the only appropriate outcome.

Patricia MacEgan addressed Abril directly in court and offered forgiveness. “I want you to know that I forgive you, I forgive you for the death of my beloved husband,” she said. “I forgive you for dragging me into the creek and holding me hostage. I forgive you for shooting me. I forgive you for changing my family’s lives forever. I truly forgive you. You have to learn to forgive yourself.” Family members, including son Kevin MacEgan and daughter-in-law Rebecca MacEgan, also read impact statements describing lasting trauma and loss of security in public spaces.

In the aftermath of sentencing, the Roseville Police Department released a compilation of dispatch audio and body-worn camera footage from the April 6, 2023, incident. The department made the video available on YouTube for public viewing.
