NEVADA CITY — Caltrans is hosting an open house on Thursday, October 2, to discuss the $13.9 million State Route 49 (SR 49) Multimodal Corridor Improvement Project. The project aims to add two roundabouts, pedestrian crossings, shared-use paths, sidewalks, lighting, and signage to SR 49 from its intersection with SR 20 in Nevada City to the Juvenile Hall west of Broad Street. The meeting will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the Board of Supervisors’ Chamber in the Nevada County Government Center at 950 Maidu Avenue, Nevada City.

Caltrans District 3 states the highway’s current configuration lacks continuous bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure for safe crossings. The district also indicates pedestrian access remains limited to the Government Center, located along that stretch of roadway.

The October 2 meeting will allow the public to learn about the project and provide input on proposed improvements. Developed in partnership with the Nevada County Transportation Commission, the project’s initial approval and environmental documentation phase is expected to be completed by the end of the year, with construction scheduled to begin by spring of 2028. Funding comes from the State Transportation Improvement Program and the Active Transportation Program.
