PLUMAS FOREST — A series of strong, wet thunderstorms brought hundreds of lightning strikes and rain that was unusually heavy in places to eastern Plumas and Sierra Counties on September 2 and 3. Lightning from the storms ignited six fires across the Plumas National Forest during the two days of storms, according to a Forest Service press release issued September 3.

Units from the Forest Service, Beckwourth Peak Fire, and Graeagle Fire responded to three new fires in the eastern part of the forest: the Willow fire on the southern slopes of Penman Peak near Graeagle, the Carman fire southwest of Portola, and the Lodge fire near the Smith Lake trailhead in the Lakes Basin. All of the fires remained small and were contained by September 3.

The Forest Service reported that 42 new fires were started across Plumas National Forest since August 24, with 40 confirmed started by lightning.
