The newly renovated Center for the Arts in downtown Grass Valley will welcome the players of the Portland Cello Project for a night of music March 27 to its Marisa Funk Theater.

Portland Cello Project began in 2006, performing its first gig at the famed Doug Fir Lounge in its hometown of Portland, Oregon. News of the group quickly spread, with their unique approach to not just classical music but to their interpretations of pop hits from such artists as Britney Spears, Prince, Elliott Smith, and Radiohead. Embracing the motto "Keep Portland Weird," Portland Cello Project has gone on to tour extensively; one night in a punk rock club, the next in a symphony hall. Their range is extensive and the group claims that there is something for everyone in each of its performances.

The group fluctuates but usually is made up of about nine cellists with additional musicians on drums and horns. It aims to bring cello to places where most people wouldn't expect it, and strives to make its shows appropriate for all demographics from kids to those in their later years. The College Music Journal said of Portland Cello Project: "Bringing everyone together in a spirit of collaboration only adds to the philosophy of diversity that PCP proudly upholds."

This concert is part of Classical Crossover, a collaboration between The Center for the Arts and Music In The Mountains. The collection of special concerts will highlight excellence in contemporary classical music, and will also give patrons a chance to support two exceptional local arts organizations. The series will also feature Black Violin and Vienna Boys' Choir.
