One of the most frequent complaints in this town is about food prices—especially from non-locals. But unless you teleported into these mountains, you probably knew you were heading into a remote area where the closest cheap meal is at least an hour away, no matter which direction you go. It’s just common sense: higher prices are expected.
When you compare them to the broader economy, though, our local prices are actually on par with most restaurants—at least the ones that don’t have a clown, a king, or a colonel as their mascot. And here, you’re not just served by staff—you’re often served by the owners themselves and their crew of locals, all along Highway 49.
Factor in the distance, the quality of ingredients, solid cooking, and the occasional one-of-a-kind local moment, and you’ll find prices that are more than reasonable. With that in mind, here’s a list of a few local menu items for those on a budget—or simply unaware of their coordinates and the economy.
Two classic staples that have become local favorites. You can enjoy them on the deck next to the river (via the St. Charles, 21+ only) or inside their restaurant alongside a former Star Magazine model. (Ask for the story.)
The only item on this list that requires no preparation—just refrigeration. Usually opened by one of our local bartenders, often accompanied by a good story, mood permitting. Find them at the St. Charles—preferably before tariffs catch up.
Top-notch ingredients served with a fantastic river view—and, if you’re lucky, a sighting of a local celebrity.
While I wasn’t able to confirm the current price of this menu item (guess you’ll have to stop by and check for yourself), it comes with your choice of sausage or bacon, pancakes or French toast, and two eggs—a luxury these days. Trust me, it was worth every cent and the sacrifice of waking up early on a Sunday.
All signs point to folks being more mindful with their money these days. And while visitors are certainly not required to eat at our local establishments (and are more than welcome to bring their own food and beverages), chances are their cooler cuisine won’t match our local flavor—both literally and metaphorically.
So, for now—locals, old-timers, newcomers, tourists, and visitors from other galaxies—let’s pretend that high prices are simply relative to your surroundings, and that we’re lucky to enjoy great quality food even out here in the forest.
