Editor,
In a turn of what I would call fate, reading Scottie Hart’s column in this week’s Mess, relaying her “road rage,” I felt her words with every fiber of my being. I had the exact same experience last week, albeit only from Marysville Rd up 49 to Downieville. As I followed a vehicle, I decidedly pointed out each and every turnout to the nescient driver from my throne...er...driver’s seat. Because they’re certainly looking in their rearview mirror constantly to see what I’m up to behind them, right? I do this often when stuck behind the dawdling. I feel like I’m providing a community service by pointing and talking to them letting them know where the good spots are to easily pull over. I consistently tell them that there are dozens of pullouts available just on that 22 mile stretch of Hwy 49. Frankly, I utilize this option fairly often myself, which is how I’m aware of all the good spots. I’m not a speed demon by any means, so if I’m behind you and gesticulating wildly in your rearview, honey you’re a snail. It felt good to read Scottie’s version, as well as her ability to self-soothe with the simplicity of blackberries.
My experience got me thinking about needing some signage to educate people on turnouts. One that gets people’s attention...something similar, perhaps to the fire prevention signs in the county that are done by our school children. Wouldn’t it be great if they could create the same kind of campaign for “using turnouts” education? No matter how many years they’ve been there, I still notice those posters by the kids. Likely just a pipe dream, but a gal can dream.
Thanks for your story, Scottie. Next time I’ll look for the blackberries so I, too, can regain my joy and gratitude.
