SIERRA, PLUMAS COUNTIES — A stunning view of the Sierra Buttes from a boathouse at Sardine Lake, beautifully captured by 33-year-old photographer Jake Edwards, is spreading like wildfire on the social media pages of folks in Sierra County. The Mountain Messenger is not the first publication to take notice of this photographer’s keen eye for the majestic; Mountain Valley Living magazine features his work on a recent cover page, showcasing an eagle — an exciting picture snapped at just the right time. Edwards is a graduate of Chester High School and has resided in the Almanor Basin area for the past twenty years. His passion for photography was inspired by his grandmother, who also journeyed to find the “perfect shot.” Her love of the camera left an impression on a young mind, resulting in a curiosity to learn the art and propelling a self-taught hobby to the invested hours of almost a full-time job. Spending 20-30 hours a week exploring nature on foot or in his car, Edwards is fueled by Riley’s Jerky and a desire to encounter the next visual masterpiece. While battling lymphoma cancer over the last five years, Edwards has clung to the unwavering support of his family — specifically his mother, whom he refers to as his “rock,” who guided him through the worst of the worst, including a few near-death experiences. According to Edwards, his determination to continue sharing his craft with the world on social media, even while hospitalized at UC Davis for months at a time to undergo a stem cell transplant, ultimately sustained his sanity and morale. The goal of the stem cell transplant was to create a new immune system to beat cancer for good, and although there were a few hiccups along the way, Edwards is in remission and continues to meet with an oncologist weekly. He is grateful for each day he has the energy to get out of bed in the early morning hours to capture the sunrise and to meet the sunset at the end of the day behind the lens of his Nikon camera.
