NEVADA CITY — On November 2 and 8, the South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL) and H2O Adventures will lead public Salmon Expeditions on the lower Yuba River. From 9 AM to 2 PM, participants aged 4 and up will be able to witness Chinook (king) salmon spawning and explore river ecology. The trips mirror SYRCL-led school field trips, including learning stops, interpretive commentary, and exploration of the organization’s restoration sites.

“Our goal is to help people of all ages see themselves as part of the watershed ecosystem,” says Monique Streit, SYRCL’s Education Director. “When folks come together, observe salmon, and see restoration in action, that connection deepens. That’s where real stewardship begins.”

According to SYRCL, California’s Chinook salmon population is in steep decline due to habitat loss, while the Yuba River remains one of the last strongholds for the species in the state. However, return rates for salmon spawning in the Yuba have dropped dramatically, making conservation more important than ever.

More information and expedition registration are available at yubariver.org or by contacting SYRCL’s Education Director, Monique Streit, at monique@yubariver.org. The expeditions are guided by professional rafting teams, with safety instruction and gear provided. Participants should bring water, lunch, sun protection, and clothing suitable for the river.
