Trivia Thrives in Downieville

March 28, 2024

DOWNIEVILLE — Two weeks ago, while this correspondent was out of town, The Divas returned after a lengthy absence to win the game held on 3/14. Capitan de los Gatitos placed second by outscoring the third-place Good Notes. And, unexpectedly, the normally very strong Hansen Bridge team came across the finish line “out-of-the-money.”

However, last Thursday, 3/21, this same team, Hansen Bridge, shared the lead from the 2nd through 4th rounds, then dropped into a three-way tie for second place in round 5 when The Three Amigos jumped into the lead. However, HB managed to slip back into first place in the final round by selecting the right answer for four out of the five final questions, while The Three Amigos managed just two, falling into a tie for third place.

Meanwhile, The House team, in last place after round 2, was taken over from Boomtown’s host starting in round 3, when a threesome from Camptonville showed a bit late. By correctly answering 75 percent of the next (more valuable) 16 questions in rounds 3 - 6, this crew scored enough points to take second place. We should not be surprised by this outcome; the last time the group showed up (then a four-member group calling themselves the Gold Diggers), they placed in the top spot.

As for the third-place playoff, the Sparkling Unicorns edged out The Three Amigos, the troika who tired at the end, stumbling from first in the next to last round to fourth once all the dust settled.

Bringing up the rear, the Yuba Dawg and the Good Excuses tied for fifth, but only 20 points away from grabbing a four-way tie for third-place. As for the prior week’s winner, after changing their name to the Still Divas and dropping to last place this past Thursday, with only one more correct answer in round six the Always Divas (my suggestion) would have had sole possession of fifth place and pushed Yuba Dawg and the Good Excuses into last.

This week, 3/28, the regulars are looking forward to a visit from last year’s winner of the Boo Trophy, Bob Ileson. Unfortunately, he is moving back to Texas very soon, and everyone who enjoyed his laconic style, sharp memory, and great skill in finding important clues within questions about a wide variety of topics will miss Bob, the handsome (inaugural) Champion for the Boomtown Lounge Trivia League season of 2023.
