DOWNIEVILLE — On Wednesday, November 19, students from Downieville School, Sierra County employees, and other community supporters gathered to stock the shelves of the Western Sierra Food Bank with non-perishable items ahead of Thanksgiving. Frank and Bette Jo Lang, who have led the food bank for 37 years, organized the effort, with assistance from Larry Breed, owner of the Sierra Country Store.
The Western Sierra Food Bank began in 1988 as an Eagle Scout project led by Mark Lang, son of Frank and Bette Jo. Today, the organization distributes hundreds of Thanksgiving baskets each year to families in need throughout western Sierra County. Individuals can request a basket by calling (530) 289-3644. In addition, the food bank operates similar programs for Christmas and Easter, while providing year-round food assistance as required.
The Western Sierra Food Bank relies solely on donations of food and cash for funding. Supporters may contribute by contacting Bette Jo or Frank Lang at (530) 289-3644, or by sending a check payable to WSFB to PO Box 254, Downieville, CA 95936.
